I've similar hour experience, I'd say a basic progression could be surface for chest galore with some shadewood and/or cactus for armor, forest underground, forest cavern, underground crimson/corruption for hearth/orb loot (just two of them to prevent spawning the bosses), sky island, mine meteor, underground desert, underground jungle.
